Wing Sail - lots of wow
Saturday, January 15, 2011

Those who dropped by were blown away by the high-level quality of the platform construction, and especially the 300-kilo wingsail. The 20-meter high wingsail was fully assembled for the first time today in the boat shed at the former Team New Zealand base in the Viaduct.
The most often heard expression of the day was simply “Wow.”
Here's what we heard around the shed.
Tom Schnackenburg Artemis Racing:
"Frankly I am impressed. It looks amazing and it’s amazing that it’s ready to go – they’ve done a great job and in such a short time."
Scott Ferguson: ORACLE RACING rig design team manager:
Scott, who was seen snapping his own photos of the final product of the wing fully assembled for the first time, commented: “It’s been an amazing amount of work by a lot of people. It’s nice to see it all fit together so well and not on a computer screen. And it passed its first load test which is a huge tick off my list.“
Rebecca Hayter, Boating New Zealand
"I think it’s fantastic. It signals a completely fresh new era in the America’s Cup. It’s also fantastic for the New Zealand boatbuilding industry – a massive endorsement for them getting this exciting new multihull up and ready. It’s still high-tech but at a more manageable cost."
