Brazilian And Argentinean Sailors Dominate RS:X And Laser In Mexico

XVI Pan American Games
Guadalajara, Mexico

At the 2011 Pan-American Games held in Guadalajara, Mexico, Brazilian sailors dominated the RS:X whilst the Argentineans are on top in the Laser and Laser Radial after two days of sailing.
Held at Vallarta Yacht Club on the waters of Nuevo Vallarta Ricardo Santos (BRA) has posted three out of four race wins in the Men's RS:X whilst compatriot Patricia Freitas also recorded three race wins in the Women's RS:X

With six points Santos leads Argentina's Mariano Reutemann by two points and Mexico's David Mauricio Mier Teran down in third on 13 points. After one of Monday's races was thrown out due to a protest in the Women's RS:X the sailors raced three times yesterday with Freitas notching up three race wins in a row. She has a six point advantage over Demita Vega (MEX) with Farrah Hall (USA) in third on 12 points.

Hall said, "In this kind of light-wind conditions it is pretty tiring to do three races in a day because there's a lot of pumping, but I ended up having a really good day.

"I think that I've learnt to be fast in these conditions. I had pretty good starts and had good tactics."

In the Laser Argentina's Julio Alsogaray has shown good consistency after four races with one bullet and three third place finishes. He leads on ten points followed by Clay Johnson (USA) on 18 points and Bruno da Silva (BRA) on 18 points. "The Laser fleet that I'm sailing is really deep. It's the biggest fleet, there are 13 boats, and there are like eight guys that are ranked in the top 30 in the world here," Johnson said. "It's really deep and everyone's mixing it up. The scores are really close, so 1-5 is a solid day."

And in the Laser Radial Cecilia Saroli (ARG) is tied on seven points with Tania Calles (MEX) but leads having won two out of four races so far. Canada's Isabella Bertold is third on 15 points.

In the other classes on display in Mexico Enrique Figueroa and Victor Aponte (PUR) lead the Hobie 16, Matheus Dellagnello (BRA) and Paul Foerster are tied on eight points in the Sunfish, Jody Lutz's American Lightning team are tied on 11 points with Chile's Alberto Gonzalez, Agustin Diaz and Carol Tocke lead the Snipe and Mauricio Oliveira (BRA) and John Mollicone (USA) share the lead in the J24.
