ETNZ/Camper Volvo skipper to be named tomorrow afternoon
The skipper of the Camper sponsored Emirates Team New Zealand Volvo Ocean Race yacht is to be announced tomorrow afternoon in Auckland.
TVNZ sports news is reporting that it will be three times 49er World Champion and Round the World sailor, Chris Nicholson (Australia).
Nicholson (40) was a watch captain on second placed Puma Racing (USA) in the last Volvo Race, in the 2005/06 event he sailed aboard the ill-fated movistar, being awarded the Musto Seamanship Award after Leg 4, for his bravery and quick thinking in saving movistar from potentially sinking.
Nicholson sailed with Emirates Team NZ CEO, Grant Dalton, in the 2001/02 Volvo Ocean race aboard the Volvo 60 Amer One, which finished third overall. He switched to offshore racing after a stellar sailing career in the Olympic 49er skiff class winning three consecutive world championships, won the Europeans in 2000, but finished fifth in the 2000 Worlds and sixth in the Sydney Olympics that year in the 49er class. He returned for the 2004 Olympics in Greece, again in the 49er finishing in seventh place overall.
Sail-World will carry further news of the announcement when it is officially advised
