SAN FRANCISCO TO CELEBRATE AMERICA’S CUP VICTORY AND WELCOME CUP HOME
San Francisco, CA—
Mayor Newsom today announced plans for San Francisco to celebrate the America’s Cup victory of the BMW ORACLE Racing team. Following last Sunday’s race victory, which resulted in a 2-0 sweep of the 33rd America’s Cup Match, the BMW ORACLE Racing team brought the Cup home to the United States for the first time since 1995.
“San Francisco is honored to host the BMW Oracle team and celebrate the return of the America's Cup to the United States,” said Mayor Newsom. “San Francisco Bay is one of the world's most spectacular locations for sailboat racing. There is no more appropriate home for the Cup than the Golden Gate Yacht Club, with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.”
On Saturday, Mayor Newsom will formally welcome the Cup to San Francisco, and congratulate the BMW Oracle Racing team and owner Larry Ellison on winning the 33rd America's Cup. This ceremony is open to the public and will begin at 11:30 AM at the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda.
A public viewing of America’s Cup is planned for Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM at the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda.
After a U.S. tour that includes stops in San Diego and possibly the East Coast, the America’s Cup trophy returns home to San Francisco for placement at the Golden Gate Yacht Club.
