En las fotos se ve que la quilla se cortó al ras del casco, junto en donde pivota el canting keel. Pero según Roland Jourdain esto tiene que haber sido en dos tiempos, sino a la primer rotura hubiese sido imposible que el barco no hiciera vuelta campana. Entonces a la primer rotura fue el bulbo, acá toma toda las precauciones de navegar con muy poca vela y lastrar todo su barco llenando los tanques de agua y luego vino otro crack en dónde el resto de la quilla se fue.
