Americas Cup: Will the next one be a battle between pharmaceutical billionaires?

Friday, 03 August 2007

It is no secret that, having built up Serona, the Swiss biotechnology company he inherited from his father, Ernesto Bertarelli sold it to Merck of Germany, in September 2006, for US$13.3 billion. Bertarelli’s personal wealth is not known precisely, but was estimated to be US$8.8 billion in the Forbes 2007 billionaire list.
Alberto Roemmers’ fortune is even less well known, but he is number 2 on lists of Argentina’s most successful businessmen and is, undoubtedly, capable of funding an America’s Cup campaign. Like Ernesto Bertarell, he has a passion for sailing and, like Bertarelli, Roemmers wealth stems from pharmaceuticals.
One of the few things that is common knowledge about the Argentinian is that, in 2003, he was a guest of Carlos Slim Helu, whose fortune of $50 million plus means that he and Bill Gates keep swopping positions for the world’s richest man title, though it now looks as though Helu has grabbed it! Helu’s 2003 gabfest was an invitation event, in Mexico City, for South America’s richest men.
What does this have to do with the America’s Cup? BYM News sources, involved in the Breitling Med Cup, believe that Roemmers is behind leading Mallorcan yachtsman Pedro Perelló’s plans to put together a well funded syndicate to make a second Spanish entry in the 33rd America’s Cup. The TP52 Siemens, which Perelló is campaigning, is owned by Alberto Roemmers.
BYM News’ source said “Pedro Perelló says he has Paul Cayard & Guillermo Parada (Argentina) in mind for the roles of skipper/tactician and helmsman and wants Juan K (Argentina), to head the design team. On the other hand, he says these are just what he hopes for and is unlikely to be in a position to enter until the end of the year.”
“That doesn’t make sense, he must know that if he waits that long other teams will have snapped up his key team players. Perelló talks of aiming for a minimum budget of €100 million, which is hip pocket stuff for Roemmers, sponsors would just be a bonus as they are for Bertarelli. Rest assured that Perelló knows he needs to move fast, as has been said, but it’s going to be a lot faster than months; I reckon days.”
“Remember that Juan K has hinted at an Argentinian challenge? This is it, it’s just a question of convincing Roemmers that an Argie/Spanish Challenge has a better chance of winning than the whole enchillada!”
