Aussies at the Med

Watch out MedCup, the Australians are coming. A team of eleven Australians, mostly from Western Australia, are making their way to Cartegena, Spain for the fourth event in the Audi MedCup series for 2011. The team are joining the 40 Series, raced in the new Soto 40 One Design that has been an enormous success in its debut year. The all-Australian effort will be sponsored by Perth winemaker, Mulberry Estate.

The Audi MedCup races two classes - the TP52 development racing class and the new one design Soto 40 Class, taking over from the GP42. The prestigious monohull racing championship races five locations on the Mediterranean each season and attracts some of the world's leading racing teams and professional sailors.

Brent Fowler from the North loft in WA has been working with Longitude Yachts to get an Australian team competing at the MedCup.

"The racing doesn't get any better than this. Warm weather, the local Mistral blowing and outstanding facilities - the Audi MedCup really knows how to turn on a good show. With the live coverage on each race we've already seen how fast these boats go and hope we get the chance to chase down leader of the series 'Iberdrola' when we get there."

But Brent's under no illusions how fierce the competition has been and how hard it will be for the team to compete at the highest level in their first foray into the heady heights of MedCup competition.

"This isn't about a one series stab in the dark. We will have our sponsors from Mulberry Estate with us and researching the possibility of staging a full campaign for 2012."
