PRESS RELEASE
November 30, 2009
SCOOT Completes Sea Trials
Nelson/Marek announced today that SCOOT, the Nelson/Marek Design 137 has completed her Sea Trials in Narragansett Bay.
SCOOT, was commissioned by Mr. Dale Phelon of Nantucket in the early fall of 2008 after he was unable to find a production day-sailor that suited his layout and performance requirements. The commission was awarded after Phelon decided to pursue a custom project and met with New England Boatwork’s (NEB) Tom Rich and Nelson/Marek’s (NMYD) Greg Stewart on Labor Day 2008. At this meeting, Phelon explained the type of day-sailor he wanted and stated his requirement that the boat had to be designed and built in America.
The team got on well, the ideas flowed, and Phelon commissioned a push button 55 foot day-sailor!!
The design started as the Nantucket 55 until early in the project Phelon came up with the idea to refer to the boat as the ACK 55 (ACK is call signal for Nantucket Airport) and to call his boat SCOOT. Ever since the design reference and boat name stuck.
SCOOT features a number of innovative design elements and systems to ease the sail handing and maximize performance that were brought to life by the comprehensive team assembled for the project. She was launched in October and was thoroughly tested by the project team and Phelon. SCOOT has exceeded the expectations of Phelon and all involved. Owner Dale Phelon’s comments sum up the project and reiterate SCOOT’s appearance and performance very well:
“Working with NMYD and the team from NEB has been fun, exciting and pleasurable. The talent we pulled together for this project has to be the best of the best and I have been amazed with the enthusiasm from the start The boat is faster than anything I am used to sailing and literally makes its own wind it goes so fast. We've done 9 knots into a wind of no more than 10 knots at relative wind angles of 35 or so degrees. The sails are easily raised, trimmed and lowered by one person and I won't hesitate to sail in 15 knots or better by me, which was one goal of the project. The boat looks as awesome as it goes. Everyone that has seen the boat
goes WOW.”
Look for SCOOT next summer in Nantucket on her mooring or fulfilling her namesake on the water!
