Racing Gets Underway At Class 40 Worlds

Competitors were greeted to brilliant sunshine for day 1 of the Class 40 World Championship racing. The wind was 5-6 knots from the southeast by the time the briefing took place at 0830hrs, and was forecasted to track to the southwest increasing 12-14knots with the sea breeze at lunch time.
Yesterday many of the competitors were taken by surprise by the strength of the tides here in the Solent, which are due to increase as we come on to springs at the end of the week.
The first of two long inshore races for the day set off promptly at 1030hrs taking them from the start at Universal Marina on a 3hr race around the cans in the Eastern Solent before finishing at Craftinshore.com, just off Wootton Creek. Big gains were to be made by judging the tides to perfection, beating into the foul tide on the mainland shore and using the deep water channels on the island shore for the downwind legs.
Local Hamble sailor, Simon Clarke, led the way from start to finish with his team of Richard Powell, Kevin George, Dick Parker, Mark Cartwright and Nick Butt on board Clarke Offshore Racing. Clarke was closely followed by Tanguy de Lamotte on board Initiative Saveurs Novedia Group in second and Mike West on board Keysource in third.
The second race of the day started at 1415 with 8-9 knots of south easterly breeze. Despite the warm weather, the sea breeze failed to materialise as forecasted. Instead the south westerly gradient due in tomorrow started to creep in half way through the race turning upwind legs into downwind legs and the race was on to see who could get to the new pressure first.
The course was shortened after 3hrs of racing at East Bramble with Andrew Dawson and his crew, Jon McColl, Johan Frost, Sean Flynn and Michael Delatte on Spliff taking first place. Tony Lawson onboard Concise came in second with Denis Lazat on Jumpa Lagi in third.
The mixed results from the first two races has left the Championship wide open and the points for the Round the Island Race tomorrow are weighted leaving all to play for going into Day 2. The over night leader with a consistent score of 3rd and 4th is Mike West on board Keysource.
